Late Dr. Surinder Kumar Dwivedi was born on February 27, 1957, in Kotkapura, Punjab, to Kanta Dwivedi and Amresh Shastri (Ph.D.), a government teacher at Govt Boys School, Kotkapura. Growing up in a family that valued education and community service, Dr. Dwivedi spent his childhood moving frequently due to his father’s profession. He completed his schooling and higher studies in various cities, including Sangrur, Bhawanigarh, Patiala, and Nabha. It was during his college years in Nabha that he developed a keen interest in politics—a passion that would shape his life's journey.
Dr. Dwivedi began his political journey at a young age by joining the Congress Party, where his dedication and commitment earned him several prestigious positions. He had the opportunity to serve under prominent Congress leaders, from Rajiv Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi. Dr. Dwivedi was known for his integrity, loyalty, and a strong sense of duty towards his community. His political journey gained the admiration of many prominent leaders and local community members alike.
In the years 2014-2015, Dr. Dwivedi played an important role in establishing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Kotkapura, District Faridkot, Punjab. Inspired by the Anna Hazare Movement, he worked tirelessly to support the party's growth by investing his personal resources and conducting door-to-door campaigns to connect with families and encourage them to join AAP. His grassroots efforts helped lay a strong foundation for the party's presence in the region.
Dr. Dwivedi married Ms. Kavita Dwivedi, the daughter of Suraj Parkash, a Senior Grade Officer at Punjab State Power Limited. The couple supported each other throughout Dr. Dwivedi’s political and social journey.
Dr. Dwivedi also made significant contributions to journalism. He began writing articles for prominent newspapers, such as Punjab Kesari and Jagbani, about 21 years ago. Through his writings, he effectively highlighted public concerns and issues, giving a voice to the common people. His association with Padma Shri Vijay Kumar Chopra, the Chief Editor of Punjab Kesari, solidified his standing as a respected journalist. Dr. Dwivedi's impactful journalism provided a platform for people to express their needs and challenges, making him a bridge between the community and the authorities.
Dr. Dwivedi’s dedication to social service was evident throughout his life. In 1985, he became the President of the Young Blood Donors Society, Kotkapura, and organized the first blood donation camp at the Old Grain Market. Over the years, he personally donated blood an astounding 78 times. His contributions were recognized by the Punjab government, which honored him with State Awards in 2008 and 2009 for his outstanding services to society.
Dr. Dwivedi also contributed to promoting sports, especially among young girls. As the President of the Kotkapura Cricket Association in 1994, he organized the first-ever day-night cricket match for girls at Government Senior Secondary School, attended by nearly 20,000 spectators. In 1998, he organized another day-night cricket match, attracting over 10,000 spectators. His visionary leadership created opportunities for aspiring female athletes, leaving a significant impact on women's sports in the region.
Dr. Dwivedi’s most enduring legacy lies in his philanthropic work through Nishkam Sewa Samiti (Regd.), which he founded on July 13, 2003, under the guidance of Padma Shri Vijay Kumar Chopra. The Samiti's primary mission was to provide free monthly kitchen supplies (ration) to widows and destitute women in Kotkapura, Jaito, and 17 nearby villages. Over 21 years, the organization distributed over ₹25 million worth of rations, supporting 360 needy families with the help of 560 dedicated members.
Nishkam Sewa Samiti was widely recognized for its service, with Dr. Dwivedi receiving a commendation letter from the district administration of Faridkot in 2006, and a State Award in 2007 for his contributions to social service. On October 9, 2011, the organization celebrated its centenary, marking a significant achievement in its journey of helping the underprivileged.
Dr. Dwivedi served as the President of Nishkam Sewa Samiti for 11 consecutive terms, demonstrating his commitment to the organization's mission. On March 27, 2023, he was unanimously re-elected as President, continuing to lead and guide the Samiti in its mission to serve the community.
In addition to his other contributions, Dr. Dwivedi worked towards uplifting the Brahmin community. In January 2018, the Shri Brahmin Sabha (Regd.) of Ferozepur honored him for his contributions to the welfare of the community. On November 3, 2022, during a meeting of the North India Shri Brahmin Maha Sabha (Regd.) held in Faridkot, he was appointed as the Senior Vice President of the Punjab Maha Brahmin Sabha. His dedication to the community was recognized by prominent leaders, and his efforts helped uplift and support the Brahmin community.
